Most portrayals of George Washington begin with the Revolutionary War or his presidency. "Young Washington" takes a different path, exploring the formative years that shaped the future commander-in-chief long before America declared its independence.
Covering Washington’s life from boyhood through the French and Indian War, the film introduces audiences to an oft-overlooked chapter of history. It follows a young man still grieving the loss of his father as he finds guidance from his older half-brother and develops an ambition to rise above his circumstances. Along the way, viewers gain insight into colonial society, the tensions between Britain and France, Washington’s work as a surveyor, and the experiences that forged his character.
Director Jon Erwin took some inspired creative risks, including framing the story around Washington’s early military service and casting relatively unknown actor William Franklyn-Miller in the title role. The result is a performance free from preconceived expectations, supported by a veteran cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Kelsey Grammer, Andy Serkis, and Mary-Louise Parker.
Rather than presenting history through a modern political lens, the film is rooted in its own time. There is no United States yet and no familiar Revolutionary War narrative. Instead, the focus is on the experiences and relationships that shaped one of history’s most influential leaders.
For history enthusiasts and moviegoers alike, "Young Washington" offers a fresh perspective on a familiar figure, revealing how the future "Father of His Country" was first shaped by the challenges of youth.
